EDUCATOR
Benjamin Coelho has been the Professor of Bassoon at The University of Iowa - School of Music since 1998.
Before his position at The University of Iowa, Mr. Coelho was the Vice-Dean and Bassoon Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil).
Mr. Coelho has written articles on bassoon performance and literature. His work has been published in the International Double Reed Society Journal, as well as the British Double Reed Society Journal. His article Francisco Mignone and the Sixteen Waltzes for Solo Bassoon has been translated into German and published in the German double-reed magazine ROHRBLATT.
Benjamin attended Indiana University, Manhattan School of Music, S.U.N.Y. at Purchase, and the Tatuí Conservatory in his native Brazil. His major teachers include Clóvis Franco, Donald MacCourt, Arthur Weisberg, and Kim Walker.

His preferred title when teaching, Professor Benjamin finds great joy and fulfillment as a teacher and pedagogue. He has dedicated his professional career to enriching and inspiring curiosity in students. Professor Benjamin has cultivated a reputation for dynamic, ludic, and positive teaching and has touched the lives of musicians of all levels. He has taught countless bassoon and chamber music classes and strives to establish connections and promote fellowship among the students. His music has brought him to five continents.
Professor Benjamin has also served on faculty at various music festivals worldwide, especially in Latin America. For the past six years, he has been on faculty at the Festival de Música de Santa Catarina (FEMUSC, Brazil). His students have been accepted to prestigious graduate programs and summer festivals. They have successfully gained national and international positions as teachers in public schools, colleges, universities, symphony orchestras, service bands, and the music industry. Other students chose to pursue careers in medicine, social work, pharmacy, and theatre production.
